Mount Girnar, located near Junagadh in Gujarat, is a sacred mountain for Hindus and Jains. Rising to a height of around 1,100 metres, it is home to several temples and sanctuaries nestling along a staircase of more than 10,000 steps. The climb offers spectacular panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside, with an atmosphere imbued with spirituality. Landmarks include the Amba Mata temple, dedicated to the goddess Amba, and the Jain temples, some of which date back to the 12th century. The climb, although physical, is punctuated by stops where pilgrims and visitors can admire the architecture and enjoy a break. Every year, thousands of faithful undertake this pilgrimage to honour their deities and find serenity at the summit. Mount Girnar is also known for its wildlife, including leopards and bears in the surrounding nature reserve. It is a must-see destination for lovers of hiking, history and spirituality.
