Cast-iron giro boxes were installed in Amsterdam from the 1930s onwards. This was done to facilitate payments via the Gemeentegiro. They were mainly located in the Spaarndammerbuurt, where a number of them can still be found today. The giro box in the photo stands in front of 'Het Schip', where a post office used to be.
