About the artwork

Train from Gornergratbahn with a view of the Matterhorn.

The Gornergratbahn is a well-known cog railway in Switzerland known for its scenic route and stunning views of the Matterhorn, an iconic mountain in the Alps. The Railway starts in Zermatt and rises to the summit of the Gornergrat, which is at an altitude of 3,089 metres above sea level. The route includes steep slopes and sharp curves, making for an impressive train journey. As the route is quite steep, the Gornergratbahn uses cogwheel technology. This enables the train to climb steep gradients that normal trains would find difficult to overcome. During the journey, the Gornergratbahn offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, glaciers and valleys. The highlight of the view is often the majestic Matterhorn, one of the most recognisable mountains in the world. The train journey ends at the Gornergrat, a mountain peak open to visitors. From here, there are breathtaking views of more than 20 mountain peaks, including the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and the Liskamm.

The Matterhorn is an iconic mountain in the Swiss Alps, located on the border between Switzerland and Italy. The mountain is 4,478 metres high and has a distinctive pyramid-shaped peak, making it one of the most famous mountains in the world and a symbol of the Swiss Alps. Its iconic shape makes the Matterhorn recognisable around the world.
