About the artwork

Graffiti on the walls of the Red Light District in Amsterdam.

The Italian word graffiti means "inscribed drawings" and is the plural form of the word graffito. This word is related to graffio (scratch) and the verb graffiare (to scratch, scrape),[1] Graffiare is related via Latin to the Greek verb γράφειν (graphein, to scratch, write, engrave).

The word graffiti is an Italian word pronounced as 'graf-fi-ti' (so the stress is on the second syllable). Although the phenomenon blew over from America, where the word is also pronounced with the stress on the second syllable, in Holland it is sometimes pronounced as 'graf-fi-ti', which then sounds almost like gravity. This is incorrect and not appreciated in the world of graffiti[source?] In Flanders it is more often pronounced as 'gra-fi-ti'.
