The Great Winterberg visibly towers above its surroundings. Its height alone makes it a prominent point in the landscape. Nevertheless, its visitors, having reached the summit, have no view from here. The reason is a dense beech forest that hardly allows views into the landscape. It is only from the view tower that people look just above the treetops and see places like the Hoher Schneeberg or the Neue Wenzelwand. On historical photographs you can see, it was not always like this. In 1875, for example, the mountain hotel with the view tower stood quite alone on the summit plateau. Since then, however, the trees have grown in height.
