This year, the April full moon coincides with the Easter moon (which is the first full moon after the March equinox). Christian Easter begins on the Sunday after the Easter Moon. In 2023, both events are very close to each other as Easter Sunday falls on 9 April.
The term Easter has its origins in the Jewish Passover. It is possible that over time the celebration of Easter has incorporated elements of ancient spring festivals (see festivals and rituals during spring), but that remains speculative. The eating of Easter eggs is of medieval origin. Easter fires are another custom. Easter (English) or Ostern (German) is derived from the goddess Ostara, according to the Anglo-Saxon monk Beda, the fourth month of the year reads Ēostrae in Old English. He writes that this month was named after the goddess Ēostrae, who would have been worshipped in England in earlier times.
