About the artwork

Magdalena Carmen Frida y Calderón (Coyoacán, Mexico, 6 July 1907 - 13 July 1954) was a Mexican surrealist painter.

Frida was close to photography as a child. She often accompanied her father, Guillermo Kahlo - a well-known photographer of German origin and Hungarian descent - she helped him in the darkroom and retouched photographic plates. This valuable archive of more than five thousand images, dormant for years alongside drawings, stories, clothes and medicine, is the product of Frida's perseverance as she worked, enjoyed and cherished these pieces. It clearly reflects the artist's main interests throughout her turbulent life: her family, her love for Diego and her other loves, her damaged body, art, politics and science, all wrapped up in the great passion she had for México. and everything Mexican. Frida cherished old family portraits, both from her mother's and father's side of the family and, of course, the portraits Don Guillermo made of her, her mother, sisters and close friends. Self-portraits stand out from this group, which were taken by Frida's father from a young age and throughout her life.

Guillermo Kahlo (Pforzheim, Germany, 26 October 1871 - Mexico City, 14 April 1941), father of artist Frida, was one of the most important architectural photographers in Mexico in the early 20th century.
