Half Dome is a granite dome in Yosemite National Park, located at the eastern end of the Yosemite Valley, in the state of California. Half Dome is the most recognizable rock formation. It reaches more than 1,444 metres above the valley and has an altitude of some 2,695 metres above sea level.
The original Indian name is Tis-sa-ack, which means cleft mountain. The north-western wall is so steep that it seems as if half the mountain has disappeared, an optical illusion caused by erosion in the geological history of the ridge.
