About the artwork

Antaios (Änti in Berber, Antaeus in Latin) was a mythological hero among the Greeks, Romans, and Berbers alike, who, according to legend, was the son of the land goddess Gaia and the sea god Poseidon (the god of water and the sea). Tinga was his wife.

Antaios was a giant about 30 meters tall and was the protector of the land of the Berbers. According to legend, he was an unbeatable giant.

But according to other legends, the Greek demigod Heracles was finally able to discover that secret and then was able to defeat him. Some mythologists argue that that battle took place in North Africa, in the region of Tangier.

Heracles (born Alkeides) or Hercules is a figure from Greek mythology who also appears in Berber beliefs. He was a Greek heros, and became famous for the twelve difficult works he performed at the behest of King Eurystheus. Heracles was a true hero, whose combination of enormous strength and considerable cleverness enabled him to perform mighty deeds.

Hans Baldung also known as Hans Baldung Grien/Grün (Schwäbisch Gmünd, Baden-Württemberg, c. 1484/1485 - Strasbourg, Alsace, September 1545) was a German Renaissance painter and maker of woodcuts.
