Harrier with frog in midair by Inge van den Brande

This beautiful bird of prey, the harrier, has just caught a large frog. With their keen eyesight, these birds can locate prey from a great height, and then in flight, catch it with their sharp talons. It is now flying low above the reeds here, on its way to its nest with young. The wide reed belt close to my house is ideally suited to the harrier's nest. In spring, I set up my camera on a tripod in a suitable spot, but at a great distance. And then wait with endless patience for the return of this beautiful bird of prey. As fast as it flies in, it is just as fast away again, so it is important to stay focused, even though it can take up to an hour before it flies back into view. Moments like these are golden for me, when I manage to photograph the bird in flight, and then also with prey in its talons. Because I used a large lens to get the bird closer, it creates a nice blurred background, against which the harrier stands out beautifully. A great image for the wall!
