The apple chaffinch is an ornate finch with a conical beak, thick head and 'bull-neck'. The plumage of the apple finch is predominantly rusty brown, but with many accents. Wide white wing stripes, a white end band on the short tail and dark brown back and wings. The deep blue, curled tips of some of the flight feathers are striking. The beak of the male apple finch also turns steel blue when spring arrives.
