About ‘Helios II — Eternal Return’ by Whale & Sons

A large yellow disc fills the upper half of the composition. Beneath it, a second form emerges from a series of black vertical lines, which then curls inwards to form a spiral. The two halves employ the same simple visual language, but organise movement in opposite ways.

Helios II — Eternal Return builds on the sun as a measure of time. The yellow disc refers to the daily solar cycle; the spiral expands upon that idea. In a circle, a movement returns to the same point. A spiral returns in the same direction, but each time at a different distance from the centre.

It is precisely this difference that lies at the heart of the work: repetition without complete repetition. Days, seasons and rituals follow recognisable patterns, but never take place under exactly the same circumstances. The transition between the sun and the spiral is formed by the vertical lines. They function as a measurable zone between two forms of time: the regularity of the day and the larger cyclical movement beneath it.

Ochre yellow, black and off-white keep the visual language elementary and direct.
