Hempenser polder mill.
The Hempenser polder mill is a ground sail mill with a grinding capacity that used to be fitted with a self-tensioning mechanism. It was built in 1863 for the drainage of the Hempenser polder which was reclaimed in 1784. In 1955 it lost this function, after which the polder administration offered the mill for sale. Because this was contrary to the mill ordinance, the province of Friesland refused permission. The Provincial Executive advised the municipality to take over the mill. This happened in 1959, when the mill was sold to the municipality for two guilders, on the condition that the diesel engine installed in the mill in 1953 to drive the auger would not be removed. In 1985 the miller's house next to the mill burned down. One year later, the diesel engine was replaced by an electric motor, which has enabled combined milling since then.
