In the Middle Ages, buildings for vendors emerged in Antwerp to allow them to trade in a covered place. Herman de Waghemakere designed the building and it was built between 1501 and 1504. It is a late Gothic building built in red brick and white sandstone. The cellar could store meat sold in the shops on the impressive ground floor. At the back of the ground floor is a chapel. The building had to provide space for 62 butchers. At the end of the nineteenth century, the then Provincial Commission for the Preservation of Monuments decided to set up a museum in the Vleeshuis for the ancient pieces found in Antwerp.
