About "Hercules & Deianira and the Centaur Nessus, Bartholomäus Spranger - 1582"

by Natasja Tollenaar

About the artwork

This painting was one of his first Imperial commissions and probably part of a series of mythological images that the artist had made at the court of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague. The dramatic action has been reduced to an arrangement against an almost neutral background.

On the way home Hercules and Deianira reach a river. The centaur Nessus offers to help the couple cross. While the man crosses, Nessus must carry the woman to the other side. Too late, Hercules realizes that Nessus wants to kidnap and seduce his wife; by doing so, he shoots the seducer to death.

The erotic allusions are obvious: Amor appears on the top left of the painting. The guy is wearing both of his nudes. The naked girl is worn by the other nude model. He wears her around her thigh and her torso, holding her breast in his hand.

Because both are exposed on the work of art, the legs, buttocks and muscular torso of the guy have been put on the statue. The woman's legs and breasts are undressed on the work of art.

Bartholomeus Spranger (Antwerp, Brabant, Belgium 21 March 1546 - Prague, before 27 September 1611) was a South Dutch painter. Spranger painted allegorical and mythological scenes with a strong sexy and erotic charge, in which many influences melted together.
