About the artwork

De Himriksmole, also called De Groene Ster, is a polder mill situated between the Frisian towns Leeuwarden and Tietjerk.
The Himriksmolen, a spinning mill with the capacity to grind, was originally built around 1860 to drain the Himrikspolder near Huizum. In 1952 the mill was moved to Rijperkerk, where it stood for a long time near the Wielzicht farm near the Rijperkerkstervaart. In 1976 the Himriksmolen was moved to its current location in the nature and recreation area De Groene Ster, where it serves as a grinder. Since then it is also called De Groene Ster. As a result of arson the Himriksmolen was almost completely destroyed in 1995, but it was rebuilt a year later. The mill is operated by a few voluntary millers.
From 1971 till 1979 the Himriksmolen was owned by the Foundation De Fryske Mole. Nowadays it is owned by the municipality of Leeuwarden. The mill can be visited when it is running and by appointment.
At some distance from the mill is the closed, wooden, 320-cm diameter scoop wheel that is driven by the mill's lower beam via a water axis and a water wheel.
