About the artwork

The Hoher Göll is a mountain in the Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria, Germany and in Tennengau in Salzburg, Austria. The mountain has an altitude of 2522 meters. The border between Germany and Austria runs over the summit.

The Hoher Göll is the highest mountain in the Göll massif, which in turn is part of the Berchtesgaden Alps.

The Watzmann is the central mountain massif of the Berchtesgaden Alps, in the Northern Limestone Alps. The mountain massif is located in the southeast of Upper Bavaria in Germany, in the Berchtesgadener Land district.

Edward Theodore Compton, usually referred to as E. T. Compton, (July 29, 1849 - Feldafing, Bavaria, Germany March 22, 1921) was a German artist, illustrator and mountaineer born in England. He is known for his paintings and drawings of alpine landscapes and as a mountaineer he made 300 major climbs, including no less than 27 first climbs. In 1867 his family decided to emigrate to Germany and settle in Darmstadt.
