Hummingbirds (Trochilidae) are a family of birds native to both Americas's. Many species have an awl-shaped bill and variegated plumage. Hummingbirds are distinctly small birds; their size varies between that of a bumblebee and a swallow. Most species reach a length of 7 to 13 cm. Hummingbirds specialise in sucking out nectar from flowers, but many species also eat insects.
In addition to their size, hummingbirds are distinguished by their good flying ability. With high wing flapping frequencies, they are able to stay in one place in the air, turn around at lightning speed and even fly backwards.
