Hypnosis (from Greek ὑπνος hupnos, sleep) is an artificially induced trance, characterized by increased susceptibility to suggestion. Hypnosis is performed by trained hypnotists, who follow a special procedure to put the mind of the person being treated into a trance-like state. It is an artificially created state of consciousness in which one is relaxed and focused on a particular subject. Recorded patterns of brain waves show that a person under hypnosis is in a state between waking and sleeping. Although the scientific history of the use of hypnosis does not begin until Franz Mesmer in the 18th century, the technique was used by magicians and healers long before that.
