At the head of IJmuiden harbour stands the IJmuiden Fisherman's Monument by Amsterdam sculptor Henri M. (Han) Wezelaar (1901-1984). In 1955, IJmuiden got a Vissersmonument, a three-metre-high bronze statue of a fisherman holding a storm lantern.
Sixteen plaques were added to the monument in 2015. These plaques bear the names of 319 IJmuiden fishermen who remained at sea from 1886.
"An ordinary fisherman, standing wide-eyed in water boots, his oilskin coat billowing in the wind that is always over IJmuiden. His right hand outstretched and carrying a storm lantern, looking out over the sea and from now on by day and night, year after year keeping a death watch over those fishermen, who once exported this harbour, but never returned". Mayor Kwint spoke these words during the unveiling ceremony in 1955.
