Drawing of Kloveniersburgwal in Amsterdam. The Kloveniersburgwal owes its name to a part of the militia which was called kloveniers, after the firearm which the men used, a veldslang. In French this was called a couleuvrine. The cleavers met in the Kloveniersdoelen next to 'Swijgh Utrecht', on the corner of the Kloveniersburgwal and the Nieuwe Doelenstraat. Later their group portrait, The Night Watch, was hung here. Swijgh Utrecht was almost completely demolished in 1882 and the Doelen Hotel was built here.
During the Second World War - from February 1941 - the Kloveniersburgwal was the border of the Jewish quarter, which was closed off by the Germans. More than 25,000 Jews lived in the "Jodenhoek" (the corner between the Central Station, Kloveniersburgwal, Waterlooplein, Valkenburgerstraat and Prins Hendrikkade).
