This impressive image shows a majestic iceberg floating in the deep blue waters of the ocean. The white splendour of the iceberg contrasts strongly with the surrounding dark water, conveying a sense of calm and grandeur.
The clear blue of the water surrounding the iceberg emphasises its purity and coolness, reminding us of the untouched beauty of remote places on our planet.
The image also shows smaller pieces of ice floating near the larger iceberg. The contrasts between the dark oceans and the light-coloured iceberg create a dramatic visual effect.
It is interesting to note that the iceberg in the picture looks like a skull because of its shape. The two lakes of the iceberg are reminiscent of eye sockets, while the irregular shape of the ice mimics the shape of a skull.
The picture was taken near Ilimanaq, a settlement in the district of Ilulissat in the Avannaata Kommunia in Greenland.
Ilimanaq is one of the oldest settlements in Greenland and was founded in 1741 by the Danish trade mission. The town is located on the Greenlandic mainland on the largely straight coastline on the eastern shore of Disko Bay. The Ilulissat Icefjord (Kangia) separates the area around Ilimanaq from Ilulissat, 15 kilometres to the north.
