Among the moss on a sloping piece of forest ground, these two mushrooms were in exactly the right place. I had spotted them earlier that day during a walk through the Loonse and Drunense Dunes. In the last light of the day, I returned with a small lamp to highlight them. The atmosphere was dark and quiet, the air full of moisture and the smell of wet wood. The light gave the orange hats a warm glow, as if they themselves gave off light. The background remained deep blue and cool, making the mushrooms stand out even more. Everything about this composition fell right into place: the slope, the contrast between light and dark, and the fine details in the moss. A typical autumn image, made with attention to atmosphere and simplicity.
The Loonse en Drunense Duinen are one of the largest areas of drifting sand in Western Europe, but at the edges you will also find quiet woods full of life. Many kinds of mushrooms grow here in October and November.
