About ‘In the Light of the Snail’ by Walter G. Allgöwer

A hint of evening light lies over the Schneck, as if the mountain itself were pausing for a breath. The rugged flanks rise from the shadows like ancient shoulders, smoothed by the wind, weathered by the elements, embraced by the sky. Between the rocky ridges, small islands of grass glimmer – delicate splashes of colour against the rugged face of the Daumengruppe.
Up here, in the Allgäu Alps, time seems to flow differently. Every stone bears the memory of millennia; every ridge tells of forces far greater than ourselves. And yet this moment feels still, almost tender: a balance of light and rock, of vastness and proximity, of the earth’s gravity and the blue of the sky.
The view sweeps across the Allgäu, across Bavaria, across the gentle contours of Europe, and for a moment the world feels vast and light. The Schneck stands there like a guardian of the heights, a silent witness to all that passes and all that remains.
