Insect hotel with a as guests a spider and a male of the horned mason bee
The horned mason bee is relatively large (10 to 15 mm) and because of its strong hairs it appears even larger. Females have black hairs on the head and thorax and bright orange-red hairs on the abdomen. Males look similar, but can be recognized by the white hairs on the head that are missing from females. They are usually smaller in size and have antennae that are longer than those of the female. Females can be confused with the stone bumblebee. On the ventral side of the female's abdomen are rows of long hairs. This is called the abdominal sheath. In this abdominal shear, the collected pollen from the flowers is transported to the nest. So unlike honeybees and bumblebees, horned mason bees do not have pollen baskets on their hind legs. The females have two curved hornets on their heads, hence the name of the species.
