Iron Dome or Iron Dome is an air defence system used in Israel to protect civilians from rocket attacks.
Here a symbolic "iron dome" an adaptation of the viewpoint over Haifa at Stella Maris. In the part of Haifa called the French Carmel is the church and convent of the Carmelites: the Stella Maris (star of the
Sea). The French Carmel is located on the western side of the city overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
The monastery with its church can be reached via the city, but also by cable car. This cable car starts in Bat Galim, at the place where Mount
Carmel almost enters the sea. The church is 564 metres above sea level. According to tradition, the cave under the altar in the church is the place where
Prophet Elijah hid in a cave when he was on the run from the Pagan queen.
Built in 1836, the church is decorated with unusual scenes from the Old Testament. In the dome, the ascension of Elijah in the chariot of fire with
horses painted. The place was already used in the Middle Ages, but a monastery and church have stood here only since the 17th century.
This vantage point gives an extraordinary view of a city where people of all origins and religions have lived together for centuries.
Proceeds from sales of this picture are donated to families of people whose houses have been or are being damaged by rocket attacks.
