About "James Seymour - The Duke of Devonsires' Flying Childers"

About the artwork

Seymour was born in London. His father was an amateur artist and art dealer, whose other business activities (as a banker, goldsmith and diamond dealer) gave young Seymour the free time to study art himself, either with his father or with the Virtuosi Club of St. Luke - a gentlemen's club of which his father was a member, specialising in art. In a short time, the boy was a self-taught artist, familiar with many of the leading artists of the time.

Seymour's love of art was matched only by his love of horses. He began spending time at racecourses early on and soon became obsessed with the sport - drawing, painting, owning, breeding and racing horses. His art proved popular among the leading sporting families of the time, eventually earning Seymour patrons in the form of Sir William Jolliffe and Charles Seymour, the 6th Duke of Somerset. Jolliffe's love of horses and art proved great, and his will would later establish an equestrian statue in Hampshire. In time, Seymour's work and fame spread throughout Europe and America.

Although his love of horse racing eventually led to his financial demise, Seymour is still among the most important early sports artists, along with John Wootton and Peter Tillemans who are considered one of the three founding gymnasts.
