Jan Baptiste Tency, Storm at Sea

by Atelier Liesjes

Beneath a leaden, brown-grey sky, a ship crashes against the rocks. The sails are torn to shreds and flutter on the yard's, de masten hellen, het vaartuig lijkt elk moment te kantelen. On the horizon lies a narrow streak of light, where the storm seems to break for a moment. The colour palette is dark yet rich: umber, olive green, slate grey, black and a single warm ochre-yellow glow on the horizon. Tency paints the sea as a dynamic, almost corporeal mass. The waves are rendered with long, curling strokes, the foam with thick white paint. The style is that of late eighteenth-century marine painting, with the backdrop effect of rocks in the foreground and gesticulating figures along the water’s edge. Unlike his predecessors, his use of colour remains fairly monotonous, which makes the storm all the more intense. It is a painting of stormy weather and awe, not of heroism. Jean-Baptiste Tency (Brussels 1746 – Ghent 1811) was a Southern Netherlandish painter who worked mainly in the Ghent area. He painted storms, calm seas and sunsets, and his *Storm at Sea* in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp is considered to be the only work by him in public ownership. His seascapes are in keeping with Neoclassicism and early Romanticism. A rare, dramatic work for lovers of classical marine painting.
