About the artwork

It is a large, streamlined bird with long, narrow wings. Adults are easily recognized by size, color and markings. Young birds may resemble a great shearwater at first glance, but can be recognized by a long, pointed head and beak, pointed tail and characteristic movements. The plumage of the adult bird is not obtained until the fourth to sixth year. The ochre yellow head is paler outside the breeding season. Adults are about 89-102 centimeters tall and weigh 2.5 to 3 kilograms, and can be 170-180 cm wide when they fully extend their wings. The body is white, the tail pointed and they have black wing tips. The head is yellowish with a blue eye ring. They dive spectacularly for fish and can do so at speeds of 100 km/h when they drop. The animals enter into a permanent pair bond, which lasts even after the breeding season. They return to the same nest for years at a time. Both partners brood for the first time at the age of 5 or 6 years on a single, blue-white egg. After about 3 months, the still completely brown young leave the nest.
