Heidelberg Castle, Baden-Württemberg is one of the most famous ruins in Germany and the symbol of the city of Heidelberg. Until it was destroyed in the Nine Years' War, it was the residence of the Electors of the Palatinate. After it was heavily damaged by Louis XIV's soldiers in 1689, the castle was only partially restored in 1693.

Van Call was a self-taught artist who became known for the many landscapes, townscapes and buildings he drew and engraved. He made a long journey via Germany and Switzerland, along the Rhine, to Rome, producing many works along the way.
