This abstract artwork, created using Indian ink on paper, consists of broad black brushstrokes that together form a rhythmic pattern. Horizontal lines, geometric structures and repeating shapes define the composition. The patterns are reminiscent of paving slabs, stacked planes and architectural grids, yet retain an organic character thanks to the hand-painted brushwork.
The black ink contrasts with the light-coloured paper. Variations in brush pressure, line thickness and ink distribution create subtle variations within the repetition. The white spaces between the lines are just as important as the black areas. This creates a balance between structure and spontaneity.
The work aligns with various movements within modern abstract art, including Minimal Art, geometric abstraction, the Dutch Nul movement and Japanese calligraphy. Parallels can be drawn with the systematic line structures of Jan Schoonhoven, the geometric compositions of François Morellet and the understated grids of Agnes Martin. The powerful black brushstrokes are also reminiscent of the work of Pierre Soulages and the Japanese artist Yuichi Inoue.
The monochrome composition also aligns with the Japandi aesthetic, which combines Japanese simplicity with Scandinavian minimalism. The use of black and white, natural materials and repetitive patterns gives the work an appearance that suits modern, minimalist and wabi-sabi interiors.
This modern abstract ink artwork demonstrates how simple lines and repetition can form a composition centred on rhythm, material and geometry.
