The Cherry Bloom Park lies in the Amsterdamse Bos. The cherry bloom trees flower in the spring.
With Sakura, or the Cherry Bloom Celebration, the Japanese commemorate the arrival of spring. It is a custom to have a picnic with friends and family under the progressing cherry trees. Flowers - and nature in general - have a symbolic significance in Japan. The cherry bloom represents a clean slate, however at the same time describes the transience of life.
Every year the Cherry Bloom Celebration (Cherry Bloom celebration) in Amstelveen is arranged in March or April. In 2000, the Japan Women's Club (JWC) contributed 400 cherry trees to Amstelveen. An unique information is that each tree has a name, 200 trees have a Japanese lady's name, 200 trees have a Dutch female's name.
