Japanese "Snow-Monkeys" or snow monkeys bathe in onsens, natural hot springs in winter. The Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata), also known as the snow monkey, is an Old World monkey species native to Japan. They get their name "snow monkey" because some live in areas where snow covers the ground for months of the year - no other non-human primate lives so high north and north, nor in colder climates. The monkeys have brownish grey fur, pinkish red faces and short tails. They love to warm up in the hot springs in the mountains around Nagano during the day in winter and have since become a tourist attraction for those who dare to brave the bitter cold and the slippery walking path to the hot springs.
