This fascinating picture shows the lush green rice terraces of Jatiluwih in Bali, nestled in the tropical landscape at the foot of the majestic Batukaru volcano. The extensive terraces, which are among the most beautiful and unspoilt on the island, extend over gently rolling hills and form a harmonious pattern of lush greenery and artfully designed watercourses. The cloud cover hangs low over the volcano, whose summit remains hidden in the mist, lending the scenery a mystical, almost mysterious atmosphere.
The sky is streaked with dense, dramatic clouds that only allow the sunlight to fall on the landscape in a muted way. This soft light makes the intense green of the rice terraces appear even more vibrant and emphasises the lush vegetation of the surrounding tropical forests. Small huts and scattered palm trees break up the picture and bear witness to the traditional, artisanal agriculture that has been practised here for centuries.
This panorama not only symbolises the impressive nature of Bali, but also the close cultural connection of the islanders to their land and their rice fields, which were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012.
