About "Jean-Antoine Watteau, the donor of Serenades (Mezzetino) - 1715"

by Atelier Liesjes

About the artwork

Mezzetino was a comic character, based on Harlequin but with his own distinctive costume, first introduced by the Théâtre italien de Paris actor Angelo Costantini on 16 October 1683. Constantini's expressive face enabled him to portray the role without a mask.
The man is playing a guitar.
Jean Antoine Watteau (Valencijn, 10 October 1684 - Nogent-sur-Marne, 18 July 1721) was a French painter from the Rococo period. Watteau's hometown, the Hainaut Valencine, was conquered by the French in 1678, for which it fell under the Spanish Netherlands (Belgium). Watteau's work marked the beginning of a new style in France, the Rococo; frivolous instead of pompous, asymmetrical instead of symmetrical, feminine instead of masculine.
