Located at an altitude of 1606 metres above sea level, the lake is the second largest mountain lake after Lake Titicaca.
The lake is also fed by more than 118 streams and rivers as well as its many springs (including geysers) and melted snow. The lake is somewhat saline with a salt content of over 2% and the water level drops by about 5cm a year. Issyk Koel has long been a resting place on the Silk Road from the Far East to Europe.
