About the artwork

Man cheerfully plays music on a lute, a medieval precursor to a guitar.

Judith Leyster (Haarlem, Holland, Netherlands July 1609 - Heemstede, buried February 10, 1660) was a Dutch painter of the 17th century who specialized primarily in genre paintings. One of the few female painters in the Netherlands during the Golden Age, she was also the only female member of the Haarlem painters' guild. Judith Leyster specialized in genre painting.

As far as is known, she was the only woman in the 17th century who ventured into these figure paintings, which were considered particularly difficult at the time. She was innovative in this respect. In her portraits, too, she experimented with light-dark effects, making facial expressions more expressive. Her paintings are characterized by a loose brushwork, which was not common at the time. In terms of composition, she focused on the main subject and paid no attention to 'side issues'. This gave her portraits something monumental. After her marriage she focused on nature studies and still lifes. The work of Judith Leyster falls under the Baroque style.
