Jules-Joseph Lefebvre (1836-1911) was a renowned French painter of the 19th century, known for his elegant portraiture and his depictions of mythological and allegorical scenes. Lefebvre was an outstanding representative of the academic art tradition of his time and enjoyed great recognition both in France and internationally. His paintings are characterised by their fine depiction of light and shadow, mastery of composition and use of vivid colours. Lefebvre was also a respected teacher at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he influenced and moulded many well-known artists of his time. His work and influence contributed significantly to the development of French art in the late 19th century.
