Tips for use

Point your camera at the floor or a piece of furniture first, then move it slowly up towards the wall. A bare white wall is hard for your phone to recognise.
Move your phone gently from side to side. Holding it still or waving it around quickly does not help.
Make sure there is enough light. In a dark room your phone has nothing to lock onto.

An exceptional black-and-white photograph of the red sea fan,
(Junceella juncea)

This image may appear to be a single strange, writhing creature, but is in fact a colony made up of hundreds of individual polyps.

Each of these tiny, flower-like bodies bears eight delicately feathered tentacles, with which it catches microscopic food from the passing current.

I particularly remember being drawn to its almost impossible geometry — a living whip that folds, twists and loops back upon itself through the darkness.

Enak Cortebeeck

Antwerpen, Belgium

ENAK CORTEBEECK is an Antwerp-based art director and designer, working in film, television, children’s media, user experience and socio-cultural campaigns. He has worked for clients including the BBC, Warner Bros., the European Union and De Filistijnen.

As well as his work as a designer, Enak is an underwater photographer. In his images, he explores texture, colour and the silent geometry of coral ecosystems.
