Kolam (mandala) drawing in front of the door of an Indian house
A Kolam is a ritual drawing, which often uses primal symbols. It is one of the fine arts of India and also a tradition, which has been handed down to each other for 5,000 years. It is a highly developed folk art, symbolising life force and power from nature. Every caste has its own Kolam.
Every morning the woman draws a geometric diagram in front of the door of her home, she uses white chalk powder. She first rubs a piece of land with cow dung ( symbolising fertility). With the white chalk powder, she puts down the points and starts drawing the Kolam.
