Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-1889) was an influential Japanese artist of the 19th century, known for his versatile talents in painting, calligraphy and caricature. His unconventional and often humorous style expressed both traditional and modern themes and left an important contribution to Japanese art history. Kyōsai is often considered one of the last important artists of the Edo period and a precursor of modern Japanese art.
