In winter, the Stuivende Duinen of the Kennemer Dunes show their most raw and original face. In the Northwest Nature Core - one of the most dynamic areas of the dune region - nature itself sets the rhythm. Here, the wind blows freely across the open sandy plains, lifting grains of sand and slowly shifting the dunes. At first glance, the landscape seems still and hushed by the cold air, but in reality it is constantly moving.
Winter brings clear skies, bright contrasts and an almost tangible silence. The low sun makes long shadows visible and exposes the structure of the drifting sand. Bald marram grass clumps resist the wind and play an important role in holding and moving the sand. This creates new dune ridges, while flattening others. It is precisely this natural dynamic that makes this part of the Kennemer Dunes unique: it is an area where natural processes are given free rein and where the landscape constantly reshapes itself.
The resilience of dune life is visible between the drifting sand. Sometimes small groups of birds migrate low over the dunes, taking advantage of the wind currents. In the distance, the soft murmur of the sea can be heard.
Winter in the Stuivende Duinen shows how valuable these natural processes are. It is a landscape that breathes, recovers and changes, a place where the power of wind and sand is central. Those who walk around here experience that the Kennemer Dunes are not just a nature reserve, but a living
system that is constantly evolving.
