This spectacularly rare meadow bird breeds in sparse, moist, flower-rich grasslands, almost exclusively in reserves. Crested cocks are known for the beautiful spring thaw of the males, who hold sham fights on the tournament fields for the favour of the females. After mating, the females turn to care for the brood. Crested cocks can still be seen in our country mainly during the migration season, but also in winter. Medium-sized stilt-walker with many forms. Typical shape due to relatively large body, fairly long neck and medium-length, slightly downward-curved bill. White patches on tail sides, inconspicuous wing stripes. In spring, males have a distinctive collar and ear tufts and are very diverse in colour and markings. The smaller females are light or dark brown and have orange legs.
