About "Kijkduin lighthouse / Lange Jaap - Den Helder"

About the artwork

Kijkduin Lighthouse, or Lange Jaap, is not just any lighthouse; it is a monumental beacon with a rich history and impressive specifications. Built in 1878 in Huisduinen, which is directly adjacent to Den Helder, the tower served to guide shipping along the treacherous sandbanks off the coast. Designed by Quirinus Harder and executed by Penn & Bauduin, it resulted in an octagonal, tapered structure made of cast iron, which, with its reddish-brown colour, is a striking sight in the North Holland landscape.

At 63.45 metres, Lange Jaap is not only the tallest still active lighthouse in the Netherlands, but also the tallest closed cast-iron lighthouse in the world. Inside, 186 steps lead to the top, where the light installation is located. The light character of the tower is unique: four white flashes every 20 seconds, a pattern that helps ships distinguish the Lange Jaap from other coastal lights. This powerful light is visible from over 50 kilometres away in clear weather.
