The king python, also known as the ball python (Python regius), is a fascinating and popular species of snake native to West and Central Africa. This name is derived from their tendency to roll up into a ball when they feel threatened, with their head in the middle of the coiled loop. This unique defensive posture has contributed to the popularity of these snakes in the pet trade.

One of the most striking features of the king python is its colourfulness and patterns. They vary widely in colour, from deep black and dark brown to bright yellow and white. Their bodies are covered in shiny scales, and some specimens display beautiful spots, stripes or mosaic patterns. This variation has led to the creation of numerous morphs or colour variants, allowing breeders to selectively breed to produce different colours and patterns.

In terms of size, king pythons remain relatively small compared to other snake species. They usually reach a length of 90 to 120 centimetres, although some individuals can grow slightly larger. This modest size makes them suitable for people interested in keeping snakes as pets, but who do not have the space for a huge terrarium.

In captivity, king pythons are generally easy to care for. They thrive in a well-appointed terrarium with hiding places, a heating source and suitable humidity levels. Their diet consists mainly of mice and rats, and adult king pythons are usually fed once a week.

Besides their attractive appearance, king pythons also have a calm temperament.
