The kingfisher is a small, brightly coloured bird that immediately stands out for its exotic appearance. Despite its name, the kingfisher has nothing to do with ice; the name probably comes from the Old Dutch word "ijsel", meaning "shiny" or "glistening" - a reference to its brilliant blue plumage.
The kingfisher is found along clear waters such as streams, rivers, ponds and lakes with steep banks in which it can excavate its nest. It is widespread in Europe, Asia and North Africa, and is increasingly common in the Netherlands, especially in wetlands.
