The konik horse is native to Poland. The animal was bred there as a replacement for its extinct ancestor, the tarpan. Konik horses are used as wild grazers in nature reserves.
I took this picture in the Oostvaardersplassen.
As soon as I walked into the area I came across a large group.
After a while I felt the need to walk a bit in the other direction of the area. The sun had started to shine, suddenly and unexpectedly I stood face to face with this beautiful animal.
The beautiful spring colors with the different shades of green fit well with the distinctive little beige coat of the konik horse.
The konik horse owes its strange sounding name to the Polish word 'konik', which means 'little horse'.
