The Krampus, also known as Kramperl or Bartl, is a frightening figure in customs accompanied by St. Nicholas, and is a figure of Advent customs in the Eastern Alps, southern Bavaria and Upper Palatinate, Austria, Liechtenstein, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, South Tyrol, Welschtirol (Trentino), parts of northern Italy outside the Alps and parts of Croatia. While Santa Claus gives presents to the good children, the naughty ones are punished by the Krampus.
