Sumo wrestling is a traditional Japanese wrestling sport usually practiced by very obese men. The wrestling takes place in a circular section of a clay floor and is accompanied by many rituals. The Japanese consider sumo to be a modern martial art.
Two wrestlers are about to face each other in an attack within this sport.
Despite the obligatory elaborate rituals surrounding the matches, a sumo match is by no means a show fight, but a short very fierce battle. In addition to pushing, pulling and lifting, punching in the face and on the throat is also permitted. However, this is not allowed with the fists, only with the flat hand.
Utagawa Kunisada (1786 - Jan. 12, 1865), also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist. He is considered the most popular, prolific and commercially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodcuts in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far surpassed that of his contemporaries Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi.
By the end of the Edo period (1603-1867), Kunisada was one of the three best representatives of Japanese color woodcutting in Edo (capital of Japan, now Tokyo).
