LATE AFTERNOON is a mixed media artwork depicting a typical Dutch winter landscape with snow and ice.
The painting depicts a scene that has long been part of Dutch culture and heritage: a group of people gliding gracefully across the ice and skating towards the distant horizon. The simplicity of the scene evokes a sense of nostalgia and a longing for a slower, more idyllic time.
Behind this serene beauty, however, lies a poignant message about the consequences of climate change. Rising temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns are making the severe frosts that made this beloved winter activity possible increasingly rare.
The artwork was created using a collage of texts covered with layers of acrylic paint. The whole piece was finished with pastel chalk. The people were drawn and filled in with acrylic markers.
I remembered that as a young girl I so much liked to cut images from magazines to paste them into school agendas, scrapbooks and even on my bedroom door. Add to this the fascination I always had for walls filled with old posters, flaking paint, scrappy billboards.. Read more…
